ISO 50001 Energy Management System

ISO 50001 Energy Management System

At a time when energy is becoming ever more important, the TS EN ISO 50001 Energy Management System, based on the efficient use of energy, is a management system that can be applied to businesses of every size in every sector and can be run on its own or integrated with other management systems.

What Is an ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) Certificate?

An Energy Management System is based on organizations establishing their energy policies, managing energy consumption through the energy management programmes they create in line with their objectives and targets, and achieving improvements by evaluating the performance of the energy management system.

Who Can Obtain an ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System Certificate?

The ISO 50001 Energy Management System standard is structured so that it can be applied by organizations of every type and size, by private or public bodies, and by any organization operating in the service or manufacturing sector. It is of direct relevance to organizations that work in connection with energy.

Benefits of the ISO 50001 Energy Management System

  • Energy-related expenses are kept under control and reduced.
  • Energy consumption is reduced through the projects that are implemented.
  • By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, it makes it easier to comply with legal obligations.
  • The use of existing devices and equipment is kept under control, and information on performance is gained by monitoring energy consumption.
  • Efficiency is increased and legal compliance is ensured; the negative environmental impact caused by waste is reduced.
  • It enhances reputation in society with regard to energy awareness.

ISO 50001:2018 Climate Action Amendment

To support the fight against the global climate crisis, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) introduced a critical additional amendment (Climate Action Amendment) in 2024 to the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System standard, as it did for all management system standards.

With this update, organizations are required to treat climate change directly as a strategic parameter when establishing their Energy Management System.

Key Changes to the Standard

  • Clause 4.1 (Understanding the Organization and Its Context): When determining their energy management strategies, organizations are required to analyze the effects and risks of climate change on their own activities, energy performance and system resilience.
  • Clause 4.2 (Understanding the Needs and Expectations of Interested Parties): The climate change-related expectations and demands of interested parties (customers, public authorities, investors, etc.) must be included within the scope of the Energy Management System.

Advantages for Businesses

  • It enables energy efficiency projects to be integrated directly with carbon footprint reduction and decarbonization targets.
  • It makes it easier to achieve full compliance with the green deal, ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) and sustainability reporting processes.
  • While reducing energy costs, it ensures advance preparation for climate-focused regulations and market conditions.
